Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro with AdventureFit image

More than just a climb — this is a full-on adventure across one of Africa’s most iconic landscapes. Are you ready?

Following Kilimanjaro’s Lemosho Route, you’ll weave through lush rainforests, cross wild moorlands, and trek across high-altitude deserts with glaciers towering above. Every step brings new terrain and fresh perspective — from scrambling up the Barranco Wall to standing on the vast Shira Plateau with the peak rising ahead.

The journey is challenging, but deeply rewarding. Nights are spent under star-filled skies at camp, with a dedicated crew of guides, porters, and cooks supporting every step of the way. You’ll gain strength, camaraderie, and resilience with each climb, until finally, in the quiet of night, you set out for the summit push. Reaching Uhuru Peak at 19,340 feet — the roof of Africa — is an achievement you’ll carry forever.

Itinerary Overview

Today serves as another key acclimatization day, with the route climbing as high as 14.000 ft. before descending a little bit to spend the night at Barranco Camp (13,000 ft).

The trail leads steadily up the ridge toward Kibo, crossing high-altitude desert landscapes with sweeping views of the Western Breach of Kibo. After about four hours, the path veers right and drops into a gorge—‘barranco’ in Swahili—bringing plenty of ups and downs along the way. Turning southeast past the lava tower known as Shark’s Tooth, you’ll arrive at Barranco Camp. If the weather is kind, the day closes with a spectacular sunset over the mountains.

With only about four hours of hiking, you’ll reach camp around midday. Set on a ridge just beyond the valley, Karanga Camp is perfectly placed for sweeping views, and will offer a great lunch and rest spot.

Though relatively short, this stage is an important acclimatization day, with steady ascents and descents across ridges and valleys.

By early afternoon you’ll reach camp, perched high above the clouds with sweeping views across the peaks. This is base camp for the summit—your final staging ground before the big climb. The air is thin, the anticipation is high, and the name Barafu (“ice” in Swahili) says it all. Bundle up, rest well, and get ready—the summit awaits.

Itinerary Overview

This is it—the ultimate push to the top! Summit day will be the longest and toughest of the climb, stretching 13–15 hours in total. You’ll leave camp in the still darkness between midnight and 2 am, headlamps lighting the way as you begin the steep ascent from Barafu to Stella Point.

Passing the glittering ice of Rebmann Glacier (16,000 ft.), you’ll wind your way north between Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers, climbing steadily toward the crater rim just west of Stella Point. From there, the final stretch awaits: one last hour along the main trail to stand at Uhuru Peak (19,340 ft.)—the very highest point in Africa.

After soaking it all in, the descent begins. First, a scree run back down to Barafu (about 4 hours), retracing your steps across the shifting slopes. Then the landscape transforms as you continue down into the lush edge of the rainforest at Mweka Camp. After days of thin air, it will feel incredible to breathe deeply again and settle in for your final night in the mountains.
